Open World-Sandbox ARPG ?

15

I thought this might need its own thread(sorry about hijacking yours Hydra). I'm getting very concerned that this game is moving away from being an "Open World-Sandbox ARPG" as we were led to believe it would be at the start of the founding, and turning instead into a linear campaign style of game. I may be entirely wrong(I really really hope I am) but there is enough info out there to make me worried.

At this point the nature of the Tier system and how it will unlock/work is one problem that deserves clarification from the Devs. Then, the most troubling thing I discovered, after re-reading the new roadmap, is that all mention of Seasons & Grand Investigations have been removed. Devs, should I/we be concerned here ? Would love for you guys to come and clarify for us.

Beat me to the punch, I was going to bring up a thread asking for some more details--I'd tune into the devstreams but it's been about three years now since I've had a connection that'll support Twitch (I know, I know, jokes about third world yadda yadda this is the best we can do here, honestly), and seeing some feedback compiled by an authority rather than guesswork cobbled together by the community would be quite nice.

Precisely why I made the video over a month ago when I did. One of the current clouds hanging over the game.

It should be stressed that the "open world trailor" released prior to the launch of the founding does explain the intentions for the open world system. Unfortunately we still have people asking "when will the open world stuff come" - It's already here. The star map, the navigation and choice in planet - to the best of my knowledge is the open world system. that isn't to say what we are doing isn't getting expanded with more choice etc. But what we have as a system is what it is.

Great care needs to be taken with the advertising now to not oversell what it is.

New season = opening a new subsector / tier etc of content - So new enemies, relics, weapons etc but also a story line and new missions relating to that. (which is what you are referring to me thinks) -

There the average decision is taken by the overall player base  on whatever choices are within the story - resulting in some sort of outcome for the story and/or sector with consequences on the following story / sector etc. It's something still present although i don't think they have explicitly used the term grand investigation in a while.

Would perhaps be useful clarification for a staff member to distinguish between a normal investigation, a grand investigation and single player campaign - although i'm fairly consident they are seperate things. Grand investigations are just the story tied in with a new season's content.

Calm yourself young one, stress leads to the dark side. I can't see anything that was intended for the product that has changed in anyway - everything you have described is still being discussed openly by them in. In-fact I think every mention of the word season from 2015-2017 has remained pretty much a constant pre recorded script very little variation :D - imagine they just aren't marketing the term grand investigation at present and instead referring to it as part of a season. I'll do some digging though.

Posted in another thread by Morzan:

"Both of these are still a feature, they're not cut from the game. The current roadmap shows the upcoming updates till September, all the features mentioned above (grand investigations, seasons, the campaign, and a lot more) are coming after that, after the game arrives on Steam Early Access. We'll talk about these and more in detail as we're getting close to Gamescom. So the updates won't stop after September!"

"Great care needs to be taken with the advertising now to not oversell what it is." Yes indeed, and more to that point...

...have the Devs cut major portions of the planned open world content (Grand Investigations & Seasons) that were listed in the original founding roadmap ? If so, why ?

The investigation overhaul I think is set out in 2 months time in September - it's the same thing as the grand investigation as far as I know although the grand investigations might be referring to the campaign? Not sure. Either way I don't think anything has actively been removed. But.. That's not to say they are the "open world content" that some people might be expecting. Time will tell what they actually include but I don't think it was ever neocores intention to make the game as "open" as some players have come to expect - non linear would have been a better choice of words.

Seasons are also planned and integral to their long term plan. It's confirmed they will be a core feature of the game as a means to introduce new content and areas. But the first season won't happen till the game is ready for the next Tier of content. So not within the current Roadmap - probably the next. (This roadmap isn't a start to finish, it's just a short term goal)

Hope that helps, more or less all I know.

I have a slightly different recollection of what the Grand Investigations & Seasons were intended to be. I remember them as being linked. Each new season would bring a new Grand Investigation. It was supposed to be something that the whole player base worked on to solve. The progress toward solving it would have effects across the Sector. This was supposed to be something separate from the generic investigations & not part of the single player campaign.

This was the core of the persistent open world sandbox theme of the game that was advertised at the start of the founding. If it has been removed or changed in the ways you suggest, it is a major reversal of the Devs original intent. EC all over again.

Yes Hydra, exactly. We need clarification. The fact that it is so far not forthcoming, is what worries me at this point.

LOL. Trust me, having seen you in your videos, I'm not the young one. But, at my age you are right...stress does lead to the dark side...the permanent "dark side." So I will relax and let you dig my friend.

Calm thyself. Neocore is actually a halfway capable crew, so they're already miles ahead of the crew behind EC. Note how our update came with balance changes and things relevant to the community, not a load of cash shop cosmetics and excuses about how the scope of the game was "too large" and "needed time to be scaled back".

Brother, I think you're behind the curve. Morzan from Neocore has replied, see 2 below. I'm good now.

To be fair I read the OP and skimmed, dropping some words of calm. I'm back on the "what is that sleep thing" bus again, now that I'm caffinated I might be able to respond more thoughtfully. :P
