New to the game and perhaps I'm missing something, but can't I save progress between waves and resume at a later date? Often I just don't have the time to play through a complete map or scenario.

I think if you are selecting small missions it should take no longer than 10 minutes or so? - With time it should speed up. Stick to hunt or assasinate and small maps. Honestly it's no longer than playing a round of cod or halo.

No, unfortunately you have to play through the map that you've started.
